Transition Initiatives are programs with two facets. The sandard Transition paradigm is not prescriptive solutions. It offers a model for how a community can find local solutions using local knowledge and talent. Transitions programs help build a sense of community. An Energy Descent Action Plan is developed from community gatherings that describes the best way to power down from the high energy use industrial model to a lower energy use knoweldge based Creative Economy model. The Energy Descent Action Plan is designed to create economic resilience.

Rational Exchanges believes the Creative Economy by virtue of being knowldge based creates resilience. A Creative Economy is a resilient economy able to withsand the shock of peak oil and its aftermath.

What we refer to as a Creative Transition Initiative (CTI) is a group of people who work together, using a designer currency to produce resilience by starting businesses in the Creative Economy.

A Creative Transition Initiative begins with a group of people who are concerned both with Peak Oil and sustainable economies. The group discusses ways they can exchange help for help - this is an ongoing discussion. From these talks creative businesses consistesnt with the EDAP are spun off.

Help is exchanged using units of local currency or rollars. Helping earns credits and being helped reduces credits and increases debits. Transition Initiatives create their own currency. For the purposes of this discussion we will assume the group uses rollars and the bookkeeping facilities of the Rational Exchange. All that is required however is a system of bookkeeping that tracks help for help.

Money is the transfer of value between people. If you do the dishes and I take out the garbage we do not need to pay each other or use money. Work is exchanged for work. This is barter. But when barter is not enough value needs to be held in storage until needed. This is why bookkeeping was invested. Money serves as a physical bookkeeping. A paper dollar is a bookkeeping unit given physical form.

Transition Initiatives allow people to track help given and help received by use of their accounts in the Rational Exchange. Rollars (units of account used by the Rational Exchange) or other local currency are generally not convertible into units of national currency. The help given the group and the help the group provides balances out. The local currency is just a handy method of allowing help to be moved from one person to another.

If we make jam and you provide strawberrries and I provide rasberries and we share the work and the jam then we do not need to be paid or pay money. The complications and exchanges can be increased many fold but so long as we are helping one another and the help we give and get balances out money is not required. If I make the jam and you sell the jam then by being paid rollars my work value is stored until you can pay for it in jam sales.

Transition Initiatives are designed so debits and credits are always in balance eliminating the need for money.
